Simple Snacks for Clean Eating

June 5, 2015

Cut out processed foods at snack time with the easy ideas.

Clean eating gets tricky when it come to snack time.  That’s one of the reasons I am such a fan of my CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture.  (Want to know more about that click here!)  I haven’t even done it for a whole year yet but I already know that this is something I will always want to do.  It forces me to eat an array of veggies that I never choose otherwise. And I end up loving them! I am eating less and feeling more full than I ever have.  The reason is that fruits and vegetables have minerals, nutrients, and vitamins that work with your body to help it feel full.  That is why you can lose weight so easily when you are eating “clean.”  (Click here for more on that.)

Clean snacking is a great way to further cut out processed foods, improve your health, lose weight, and get the most out of your basket!  Here are some of my favorite “snacks” (from my spring and summer CSA baskets), plus how I prepare them!

1/2 cup slices = 8 cals low in saturated fat NO cholesterol

Cucumbers are so low in calories you can literally eat as many as you want without thinking twice.  I started out dipping them in ranch but after a few days of that I no longer craved the ranch and began eating them plain.  They are easy to eat on the go, as a side at lunch, or a quiet snack while I work.  Also – farm fresh cucumbers taste nothing like the store-bought ones. Farm fresh ones are amazingly delicious!

Watermelon is a great snack for any time of the day. Since we started eating watermelon this season I have used it to satisfy my sweet tooth at night and perk me up first thing in the morning. I especially love giving it to my kids because I feel no guilt over however much they eat and they feel like they are having a special treat!

Interesting side note about the seeds: you should eat them.  I found this awesome pin which explains why.

Tomatoes are extremely healthy.  I am not a huge fan of them but, I absolutely love farm fresh ones.  I eat them by the slice with fresh ground pepper and a tiny bit of mozzarella cheese on top. Tomatoes are a “free of charge” addition to any sandwich – meaning they add practically no calories. I also make a nice little hors d’oeuvre:

Strawberries are extra good when they are fresh. Strawberries are a great snack any time of the day and make a great addition to cereal, oatmeal, salads, and desserts. I often snack at night as I enjoy an hour of Netflix and after a few nights of snacking on strawberries my body began to crave them in the evenings.  So much better to eat strawberries at night than chips or popcorn!

Also – Please don’t add sugar like grandma always does! They really don’t need it.  Just rinse and enjoy.

Other Clean Eating Snacks:

carrots, snap peas, broccoli, blueberries, cherries, apples, SMALL amount of nuts
